Abstract

The study was conducted on the ground flora of Acacia auriculiformis A.Cunn. ex Benth., Casuarina equisetifolia L., Eucalyptus tereticornis Sm. and Tectona grandis L.f., plantations in Panampally, Palakkad District of Kerala. The age of the plantations varied from three and a half to five years. A total of 59 species were recorded from the area. Eucalyptus supported the maximum number of species (36) and least number (15) were recorded from open area. The highest density of 105 plants per m2 was found in Casuarina stand and least (39 plants per m2) in Acacia, which was probably because the plantation had accumulated a lot of leaf litter which had some allelopathic effect on the seed germination of the species. The dominant species were Chromolaena odorata, Hemidesmus indicus, Ageratum conyzoides and Mimosa pudica. Fabaceae was the dominant family represented by a total of 11 species.
